How does family day care work?

Family day care is approved child care that truly focuses on each individual child’s development, while providing high quality early learning in an educator’s own home.
Educators typically provide home-based care to a small number of children, the ratio of carer to children preschool age and younger is one to four with a maximum of seven children being allowed in care including primary school aged children.

In what areas can I provide family day care?

Our family day care educators are available in the Wyndham, Brimbank, Hobsons Bay, Geelong and Surf Coast areas.

What qualifications do I need to be able to provide family day care?
  • Hold or be working towards at least Cert 3 in Children’s Service,
  • Hold a Working with Children card,
  • Full First Aid as well as a CPR if required,
  • Current Police Check.
How much can I earn?

Fees for family day care vary according to location, the educator’s qualifications and the hours of care. However, the typical fee range is $8.50-$14 per standard hour of care with higher rates public holidays or non-standard hours care.

 Some educators provide food, nappies and transport, and these are at an additional cost.

Will families of children in my care receive the Child Care Subsidy?

Yes, the Child Care Subsidy (CCS) is available when using family day care.
